Susan Mcleary of Passionflower Events
What inspires me? I am inspired by many things… the layers of foliage of a landscape, the farmer’s market in August, the places I’ve traveled- but I am especially inspired by unusual, uncommon, and hard to find floral elements. Just as it is in good cooking, I believe in floral design, each ingredient should be of the best quality, and should be interesting in its own right.
Holly Rutt of Sweet Pea Floral Design
By day I am a Wedding Floral Designer for my indie biz Sweet Pea Floral Design. By other parts of the day I am an heirloom soap maker with a passion for the best body care ingredients available. I love fusing the organic beauty fresh flowers with the refined artistry of great design.
What inspires me?I am completely inspired by nature, that golden spiral that appears in so many places, leaf veins, nautilus shells, wood grain, and feathers, camp fires, and my house plants (of which there are many). Whenever I’m uninspired a good drive to the country or walk in the woods fixes me right up. A strong cup of black coffee and James Taylor’s greatest hits will do the trick when I can’t get away.
Tracy Swinburn of Red Poppy Floral Design
I started with a single floral design class while living abroad in London and then fell in love and completed training at the Jane Packer Studio. I started Red Poppy in 2011 and have loved growing in Ann Arbor ever since. I love the creative variety of designing with new and different materials all the time – each new season has its own excitement – the return of parrot tulips, peonies, zinnias, dahlias, scented evergreens…
What inspires me? I am inspired by the creative possibilities with floral design — and by how we use flowers to communicate things we can’t say in words. It sounds cheesy, but it’s true – I am honored that people trust and connect with me for their most meaningful family celebrations and also in times of comfort. I love travel, national parks, and gardens of all kinds.
Kerstin Guendling of Eden Floral
Originally from Germany, I love sharing European floral design with my customers at the Plymouth Farmer’s Market, for weddings and special events, and now through teaching. I use European floral design techniques combined with local Michigan elements – I love foraging for interesting materials on walks!
What inspires me? My love for nature goes back to my Dad who taught me to always look closer and discover the beauty of creation. Especially flowers have always been my passion! That’s why I started floral design! I’m inspired by the many different colors, textures and shapes of flowers and foliage – just a great variety to be creative with!
